While many of us think the end of summer means the end of our beautiful flowers we can easily extend our flower gardens another two or three months with the correct fall perennials.

Should you enjoy blue flowers then seriously consider planting a great perennial called Ceratostigma which is a great ground cover and is part of the Plumbago family. It has tons of brilliant clusters of blue flowers and lovely dark shiny green leaves which turn red in the late fall. This needs some good well-drained, fertile soil and needs to be in the full sun.

If you have a shady, moist area with some humus rich soil then consider planting this beauty whose flowers grow to 48". Cimicifuga will deliver very slender creamy white candle-like flowers that add lots of height to a garden and if you choose a species called ramose Atropurpurea' you will get an added hit because its leaves are mahogany and purple stemmed.

Of course the grace and beauty of Russian Sage (Perovski) though classified as an herb is a great perennial that will provide you with swaying gray foliage and lavender blue to gray blue flowers. This plant will take you through summer well into fall and it really thrives in poor soil as long as it is gets planted in the full sun. This looks great when groups of it are planted with others colorful perennials such as those mentioned in this article.

Don't forget to add some Coreopsis. Ours was planted about nine years ago and it has never stopped gracing our garden with its lovely yellow flowers and you can even add Limerock Beauty for the deep burgundy flowers and when you want a stunning flower that is white with raspberry eyes then plants some Sweet Dreams. Regardless of what you plant Coreopsis thrives in partial shade or full sun in well drained soil and will attain the height of 18 inches.

As I look out in my cottage garden I can see the Sedum has arrived. You cannot go wrong with this addition to a fall garden as this does well in full sun and the five petaled flowers come in white, yellow and pinkish to burgundy tones.

Don't forget the fall blooming asters and you might enjoy adding some Japanese Anemone, whose blossoms remind me of small colorful poppies ranging from white to soft pink, and from deep pink to dark rose and do well in partial shade to full sun.
