How to Do More Gardening With Less

Gardening can be an expensive hobby or you can learn to do more gardening with less and the less can be not only about money, but also about space and time.
For those who send a great deal of time raising a family and have a full time job then time may be a problem for those who might enjoy gardening but feel they may not be able to do it justice.
Let me give you an example. The other day stopping at a local yard sale there was a two foot by four foot white wooden baby cradle without the rockers. It was in good shape except for that. The owner wanted five dollars and would have taken three. Had I been in the market for something like that I would have bought it because I would have taken it home, drilled some holes in the bottom of it, lined it with clear plastic which I would have stapled to the wood, punched holes through the plastic in line with the holes I drilled into the wood, found a nice location for it where I wanted to make a statement, filled it up with dirt and planted some great perennials in it that we would be able to enjoy each season.
This type of container would have made a handy herb bed for 4 perennial herbs placed in a handy place outside your kitchen door. The whole thing could have been created for under $15.00 dollars even if you had to buy some dirt!
Not much space? Then consider another yard sale or flea market bargain such as a chipped cup and saucer which can be filled with dirt when you add some colorful pansies. This will look great inside or outside and give you pleasure for many weeks for around five or six dollars.
The next time someone is throwing away a broken chest of draws then consider asking for all the drawers. They will make handy, dandy raised beds and just do the same thing to the drawers as I mentioned above for the cradle.
These little ideas are great ideas for the beginning gardener who does not have the time, space or budget for a big garden.
