Election Day, Where We Replace the Devil We Have with the Devil in Waiting

That is basically what it boils down to for me. I have voted in many elections and will do so this November also, but the choices seem to get worse and worse.
We expect so much, we believe so much, we do not want to believe anything less than what was done 200 years ago by the framers of our constitution who were simple gentlemen farmers, merchants and lawyers. They were amateur politicians compare to today's politicians.
If these men were around today to view our election campaigns at any level they would be appalled simply because campaigning for them would have been an act of personal dishonor.
These men were asked to serve, got elected, did the best job they knew how to do and then went home unlike the politicians of today who are career politicians hiring armies of consultants and forming committees to "suck" in millions of dollars in "donations" from every registered voter across this great country. We get those mass mailings as I am sure you do also.
The "new" politicians created a system of Income Tax seventy years or so ago to rape our citizens of untold wealth, usually spent on things we do not endorse or skimming off so much "pork" or whatever one wants to call it, with a system of tax laws, reforms and gobbly-gook that takes another army of specialized people to help a tax payer through the maze.
Our founding fathers could never have envisioned a Social Security plan as we have today. They would be scandalized and if any business, even today, ran their business as our government runs the Social Security plan they would be arrested for many things including, but not limited to embezzlement!
This republic of ours, with its warts and all, has the greatest democracy system going when it is balanced against other counties systems, yet we have no recourse against all I have mentioned in the above paragraphs.
So, we blindly listen and watch TV campaign commercials, debates and go to the polls, blindly, believing that our vote will turn the tide and turn out the devil we have for the devil we are going to get. I know, because I will be at the polls along with my fellow citizens.

hi arlene,i'll be at the polls as well, sadly voting for the lesser of 2 evils in my mind. i hope i don't make a mistake, but i have a feeling many of us are thinking that. thanks for a well written, interesting article, best regards, sueSue, Wouldn't it be great if they gave an election day and no one showed up?“Tread the Earth Lightly” and in the meantime… May your day be filled with…

Amen. I totally agree. I will be voting, but I may as well do it blind folded because it really doesn't matter which way we go. I'm afraid it's all down hill from here. Thanks for a great, well-written article.SandraSandra, I do not think we really understand how downhill it truly is. We , as a nation of Americans, can not even comprehend ourselves as being anything but invincible. Well, USSR, Alexandra the Great, The Roman Empire , etc all thought the same thing and where are they now?“Tread the Earth Lightly” and in the meantime… May your day be filled with…

Personally I think history ends up romanticised. I'm not so sure that the good old days were necessarily so good nor that those in power weren't just as corrupt, self focused and self serving. However I do agree that the present day choices seem to be slim pickings indeed.Have a good day,Ben.Hi Ben, Thanks for reading my article and for your fine comment.I am sure you have a good point, especially with Jefferson and Franklin, but I wasn't romanticising about the fact that yesteryear's politicians, especially our founding fathers did the best job they could trying to unfetter themselves from Taxation without representation and then went home to their respective jobs unlike today's grafters and grifters who call themselves servants of the people who still give us extreme taxation without representation unless you are a corporation with special lobbyists looking out for their interests.“Tread the Earth Lightly” and in the meantime… May your day be filled with…
