Plants That Love the Rain

I learned a long time ago there was nothing I could do about the weather except dress for it. Why complain about it? I can't do anything about it. My late father-in-law's statement when it rained was, "I hope this rain keeps up!" and when someone asked why, his reply always was, "because it won't come down."

Well, all plants love the rain and so should you. The water your plants received from Nature's rainfall will be healthier for your plants than the water you wet them down with from your city or county's water source. Matter of fact your plants are better off with too much water from rain than from your hose that delivers your city or county's water source.

Your wallet will even love rain because it is free water so consider putting some rain barrels out and let your gutter spouts come down into them and they will fill up quickly.

Fern's especially will love the rainfall as do the Cannas and Vincas. Black Magic Elephant Ears plants will enjoy good rainfalls as will Astilbe and Hostas. Peonies will enjoy the rain, but I hate it when those lovely blooms bend over due to heavy rain and turn all brown.

Be aware that rains will constantly wash away the nutrients from you soil and often the soil itself so you will need to use good organic feeds and fertilizers as you replenish your gardens. Those plants in containers will need more than in your gardens. Do not use chemical fertilizers, but once a month a good dose of organic matter from your compost heap or of vermicompost will do the trick.

Gardening is a gamble as I well know from when we had the dairy farms to worry about. Too much rain is a major problem also. That is where the old adage came from, "Make hay while the sun shines."

Bring your indoor plants out for a good rainfall once in awhile. They will love it.

Going to your local nurseries and garden centers is a good thing to do on rainy days. Just wear a rain coat and bring an umbrella. There will hardly be any crowds and you may well get some good bargains. I never hesitate to ask for a discount whenever a plant is looking a little ragged and I usually get it full well knowing a little TLC or repotting will bring it back to life.

"Tread the Earth Lightly" and in the meantime May your day be filled with Peace, Light and Love,
