This week a question came via the telephone and the caller asked, "What exactly is the "Friday Night Club" and could anyone attend?

There are lots of "Friday Night Clubs" all over the world. However, at Avalon Stained Glass School & Creativity Center it is a place where people can come with any project (sewing, art, crafts or whatever) they want to bring and "let their creative juices flow" with the help of free instruction and help on that project regardless of what it may be and yes anyone can attend even children.

At our "Friday Night Club" sometimes there are only 2 or 3 people and sometimes there are 10 or 12 people all doing something different and between the times of 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM CT they share constructive ideas, observations, sometimes refreshments if they happen to bring any and great fellowship.

For those who do not have a project to bring, there is always an ongoing "project" here at the "Friday Night Club" and let me give you an example.

Last week we had a local couple show up to learn about the "doodling" projects we have going on and he told me right from the "git-go" that he really did not want to be here but his wife wanted to come and wanted the company. Being a grand fellow and a good sport he jumped right in with that night's doodling project which happened to be about Paul Klee. We talked a little about Klee, reviewed some of his colorful works of art and then using Klee's techniques he "doodled" his first work of art. He was amazed how he could see his creative juices flow and when asked what his drawing mean to him he explained some great insights into himself. Getting with the program he proceeded to add color to this work and it inspired him to make a second painting and pretty soon he was really getting excited about his results. During this time his wife's creative juices were also flowing and soon she was showing us her first painting which was pretty good for a first timer and I think Klee would have admired it.

At this point the reader needs to remember we were working with the Klee techniques which are almost childlike so no one needs to feel that they need great artistic drawing talent. The next thing we know is that the infectiousness of the energy of these two started to affect me and I was surprised because I usually never get involved with the "Friday Night Club" except to host and help with whatever instruction is needed. Yet here I was doing the same thing as these two. Before we knew it we had each created 3 paintings that were great fun to do and fun to look at and we all had a grand time. We got to share, we got to know each other and we got to learn about an artist we did not know much about and to see his work. We became aware of colors, textures, style and the fact that "anyone can create art without knowing how to draw a straight line" and best of all we got a chance to let our creative juices flow!

When they left they said it was the best $5.00 they had ever spent (which is the per person cost to attend the "Friday Night Club" which covers any and all the materials used) and to expect them back next Friday night.

World-wide "Friday Night Clubs" are being created just to give the attendees a glimpse at what they might be able to do or to share ideas or to get to know people. Sometimes people come just to have an inexpensive date doing something they can not do any place else. Sometimes they come to give their children something special to do and to spend some quality time with them and a place to let your creative juices flow!

I've never heard of a "Friday night club" but yours sounds really great. I love the story of the reluctant husband!

I am glad you liked the story. Why not start a FNC where you live?
