What Were You Doing on the Morning of 9/11? ©

On 9/11 the phone rang, waking us up, and our oldest daughter called crying while saying “Turn on the TV we are at war.”

We promptly did and it took a few minutes for us to comprehend what was going on with the pictures of the first World Trade Tower being hit. My first thought was of the day our dear friend, Jimmy Grismer, who was the supervisor of the whole army of the trade’s maintenance work force, took our family up to the top of one of the World Trade tower as it was being built.

Then right before our very eyes a plane flew into the second tower. It was an unbelievable sight only to be topped a few minutes later by the whole tower imploding unto itself. My thoughts were flying around inside my mind. How could this have happened?

The second tower collapsing was just like many of the buildings I have seen demolished. A plane flying into the first building did not do to that building like the plane flying into the second building did. My first thought was it was like someone had totally wired explosives though out the second building in order to collapse it down unto itself and this thought has stayed with me to this day.

My second thought was that this was what December 7th, 1941 must have been like to this nation. I was 6 years old at that time and the impact of that event did not affect me like this one did.

At a later date I discovered that my cousin, Marilyn, who worked in One WTC and was in the concourse level when the plane struck....missing the elevator off the concourse by 2 seconds that the fireball came through, and was out on the street when the second plane flew into 2 WTC.

The leader of our country at that time reacted as the leader of this country did and though the 1941 event was the result of several things including oil, it was not like the effect the 9/11 seemed to produce which again was a reason to deal with a commodity such as oil. We truly went to war and we won. We did what we had to do then, not what we feel we have to do now.

We basically went to war that day of 9/11 even though we no longer are politically correct to say it is war and like many conflicts since the Viet Nam war we have not done anything that would make us a winner of a war or conflict simply because we have to deal with what everyone else will think of us or what we will appear to be to everyone else. On 9/11 we were now dealing with a nation of people who had been at war with everyone they hated for 900 or more years and will probably continue to do so for more time than I would like to think about.

Today this country is so driven to be politically correct about everything. We are so afraid to stand up for ourselves simply because we deal with the UN, the league of nations, NATO and whatever else we have embroiled ourselves in besides politicians who have personal gains in overseas economies, assets and commodities.

As the week of the World Trade events have worked themselves into years we have seen so much change in our once great nation it seems like most Americans do not seem to give tinker’s damn as to what is going on. Right now we are in an economy that is as bad or if not worse than the Great Depression of the 30’s and as we sit on our couches watching TV we do not even connect it with the fact the it is not only economically bad here but though out the world.

We remember 9/11 and we fly the flags on Flag Day as the incoming emails ask us to even though we, personally, have daily flown our flag at our house ever since I can remember.

We remember 9/11 even though we deal with idiot and corrupt politicians that we continuously elect and re-elect and who do not take the time to read the bills they pass simply because today’s lobbyists control what happens to us.

We remember 9/11 even though we have just about forgotten 12/7/1941! We remember 9/11 while our politicians continue to pass our foreign aid bill that in one full swoop sends aid to not one or two countries, but to a total of 150 countries in the world of 162+ or – countries without even finding out who gets what while our own nation is swiftly become a nation of homeless, jobless people, a nation of hungry children, a nation of many elderly people who will not be able to support themselves, a nation who no longer has any real leaders at the helm.

What were we doing on 9/11? I think we were so stunned that we simply gave up and went to back to sleep!
