Dear Diary©

Years ago I would have never considered keeping a diary even though I had annual time management business books I carried every where for almost 30 years that could also most be considered a dairy since it was a chronological history of what I did and where I went with whom and at what hour of the day or night.

Upon retiring from my career as an International Real Estate Consultant and Exchanger after almost 43 years in 1998 I found I had time to start my career as an artist and I developed a watercolor journal and a pictorial diary of what I was creating and that basically was as far as I went with the journaling idea.

However, in 2000 I suffered a stroke and also in that year our middle son unexpectedly passed away.  While recovering from the stroke and especially after Fred’s death I decided I wanted to keep track of my days and especially of family and friend events that were dear to me and I made sure there was nothing in there that I would not mind someone reading after I joined the cosmic board of directors!

I make entries every evening and each year has its own file.  Sometimes I only note the weather, but usually add what the day was like plus pictures of family, friends and art creations by both Carl and me.  I often think it is being able to correctly pass down family history and wish I had started it earlier.

Regardless, I am now in the 9thmonth of my 11thyear and could probably make a nice book to pass on to our kids and grandkids.

I do not personally keep a diary nor have I ever kept one. Many time I have regretted that choice. As I look back over the numerous years, I see clearly that a diary (or I prefer calling it a journal) is a valuable tool for those that follow. Certainly many entries will not matter in the grand scheme of things. But some of them will provide details and life choices and experiences that can never be reconstructed or recalled. You are doing absolutely the right thing by keeping your record based on everyday life. It is your life and those you love may well treasure it if they can no longer be with you.

Many of my cousins are going family tree crazy right now and if those behind us had kept diaries or letters the cousins searches would be a whole lot easier. Right now I am the oldest one left alive and my stories help them out a great deal.

I am too. Sad thing is that when we are gone, much of the history goes with us. In my case that's especially true because there are so few blood relatives from the past and their names and details are sketchy at best. There are less than five, if that many
