This week’s email question asked “Why do you keep insisting that everyone can create art?”
Since humans started to draw on cave walls art has been created. It is an inherent trait significant only to the human species. From just about everyone who walks into our studios both Carl and I hear “I can’t even draw a straight line.” Both our answers are, “You never tried.”
Perhaps our first art project as an adult might not be as rewarding as we would like, but very few people sit down at a piano and play a concerto immediately. Like a musical instrument one has to practice, drill and rehearse. With the right instructor, video,
Let’s suppose you do not want to be a full time artist, but you want to be a successful business person whether you are an entrepreneur or work for someone else. You can rest assured that most everyone who is successful in there business has some sort of internal creativity. I know I do and I used it for 43 years in a totally unrelated business. When I retired from that business I decided to take up my brushes and pencils and see where it would lead me.
I look back at those paintings and drawings 12 or more years ago and compare them against today’s work and I see marked improvement. I also see a marked improvement in not only my sales, but my sale prices. Along the way I have met interesting people and like-minded people who have shared their trade secrets with me.
I do not care how busy you say you are because whether you are a professional or a novice artist the minute you become involved in any creative art process you are going to get lost in the moment, you are going to feel the stress and anxiety drop out of your life and you are going to become so liberated that you will discover what true freedom is.
Even when I cook I know that cooking is an art and along life’s long road I discovered the art of living well in today’s world without dragging along a lot of trappings. My gardening has become an art as I let my creative juices flow.
Getting creative doesn’t take a lot of money, it simply takes a little time and it takes you giving yourself permission to become creative and there are plenty of inexpensive workshops out there waiting for you to try one of them.
