Necessity is the Mother of Invention©

As a chronic bronchial asthmatic I have dealt with this problem for almost all my life and when I live well, take my Mullein capsules every day and stay away from people who are dealing with the sniffles I fair very well to the point that I no longer need inhalers, prescription drugs and all that other ilk.

However, once in awhile I get a spasm of choking as I did about 3 weeks ago and I could not get to sleep for love or money.  About two years ago I threw out two bottles of cough syrup that had been on a shelf in the pantry for about four years.  Now there was nothing around and it was 1 a.m. and the nearest 24 hour market was a 75 mile round trip.

Here at Home Farm Herbery I am always concocting culinary herb blends that I sell on line and at the local farmer’s market.  Remembering that “Necessity is the Mother of Invention” and since I was awake and up I got up and started to concoct something that might help me.

Here is what I ended up with and it worked for me.

In a small glass jar I poured in 8 tablespoons of water and 4 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar.  I then added 4 tablespoons of honey. Next I added 1 teaspoon of ground ginger powder and 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper.  I shook it all up and took 3 tablespoonful of it.  It worked and my choking and coughing subsided and I got some sleep that night.

As a SMA comment I am stating this only worked for me and I recommend anyone who has similar symptoms to go see their doctor.

The next night I had another slight attack so I took 3 more tablespoonfuls and got the same result.  Since then I have been fine.  However, honey and vinegar are virtually items that will last a very long time without refrigeration etc so it sits on my shelf just incase I need it again.

“Necessity is the Mother of Invention” is a saying I learned from my maternal grandmother and it was instilled in Carl by his father who practically lived his life by that metaphor.  We have saved considerable money, time and who knows what else over our life times by remembering that “Necessity is the Mother of Invention”.

Hi Arlene.

You know how when the pull breaks off of a zipper, the zipper doesn't work anymore. It's because there is a little lock inside of it that only disengages when you pull on the pull. This keeps the zipper from unzipping when it shouldn't. Most folks probably toss out whatever it was that has the broken zipper. But I, with my wire wrapping, jewelry making experience, just get out my tools and whip myself up a new pull. Voila!

Bernd and I pretty much live by that saying as well. And I've used honey all by itself to soothe my throat or quiet a cough. Much tastier than the commercial stuff too!

I enjoyed your article.

Hugs,

Dianne

Hey Dianne,

Thanks for the great tip. Believe it or not I like the zip the spices gave to the homemade cough syrup including the apple cider vinegar.

Thanks for your tip.

This is an anti-inflammatory brew that sounds tasty too. I am really into these concoctions. All the best to you, and your health.
